Meet Janey

I have a passion for music. If I’m not teaching music, I’m either singing, playing the piano or cello or listening to music.

I qualified as a primary school teacher in 2003 and since then have been teaching music in primary and prep schools in the local area. In 2009 I took the step to leave the role of class teacher and concentrate on being a music specialist.

Maxwell Mini Music started in July 2014 and in that time has built a loyal following from local families, mainly in the Beckenham area. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the growth and development of many children who joined as new-born babes and are now confident walkers who enjoy their weekly music class with their friends. In addition in June 2017 I took on the role as music teacher in a local nursery school. During Lockdown I have been publishing regular Blogs including short music sessions.

In 2013 I started running a multiple schools’ choral festival in the Westerham area and this event has become popular and successful.  In 2018 I also started a Choral event for primary schools in the Beckenham area as part of the Arts At St George’s Festival, now an annual event in the June calendar (although the 2020 & 2021 events were cancelled because of Covid-19).This experience together with my BA(Hons), MA(Mus) and PGCE have enabled me to become a Member of The Incorporated Society of Musicians (a professional body for UK musicians). My teaching is inspired by the music education philosophy of Zoltan Kodály. I have attended a number of courses run by the British Kodály Academy. I also completed their Early Years Certificate in 2019 with a Distinction and attended an Early Years course in Hungary in February 2020. In September 2020 I started a MA Education (Early Years Music) through the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and Birmingham City University. In January 2021 I became an Early Years tutor with the British Kodály Academy and in November 2021 joined the Junior Guildhall team as a Deputy Teacher on their Kodály programme. In June 2021, Maxwell Mini Music became a part of the Bromley Music Hub (BMH) partnership, run by Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT). In July 2021, classes moved from Beckenham to their new location at BYMT’s home in Bromley.

I’m an active member of three choirs: the widely acclaimed London Philharmonic Choir. the choir of St George’s Church, Beckenham and the Bromley Philharmonic Choir.  Musical highlights in the last few years have included singing at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall (including the BBC Proms), St John’s Smith Square, Westminster Abbey and Cathedral and singing in various venues in Rome including St Peter’s Basilica.

My hobbies include attending music concerts, especially the BBC Proms and London Philharmonic Orchestra concerts, walking and reading.
